FOUNDERS DAY

Celebrating these humble beginnings will be the focus for the Third Annual Live Oak Founders Day celebration. This event will be held at the Suwannee County Historical Museum on Saturday, May 12 from 9am – 3pm.  The day will feature several programs and presentations focusing on the history and personalities of Live Oak’s humble History

The Suwannee County Historical Commission will host an open house of the Union Passenger Depot from 10am until 2pm. The Commission will also introduce a self guided walking tour downtown, known as Founders’ Trail.  Brochures will be available for distribution.

Beginning at 10am, local Historian and Author, Eric Musgrove will share historical anecdotes and glimpses into Live Oak’s rich and diverse past and its public figures, offering insight on subjects such as the Railroad, industry and commercial growth.

The Suwannee County Museum will also feature a renewal of displays within its galleries, adding a special focus on the persons and events that shaped not just Live Oak’s history, but Suwannee County’s as well. In celebration of this anniversary event, the museum will offer free cake and refreshments beginning at the 11:00 hour on the deck of the Historic Union Passenger Railroad Depot.

ROAD TO OLUSTEE

OPEN HOUSE: February 11

The Suwannee County Museum is proud to announce their plans for this year’s Road to Olustee event. The museum will feature a month-long exhibit of history relating to the Civil War and the vital part that Florida and Suwannee County played in this historic time of battle.

The museum will feature a month long exhibition through the month of February and an open house event on Saturday, February 11 from 9am – 3pm. The open house event will feature local re-enactors representing the soldiers of the Leon Rifles of the Department of the Gulf. These soldiers will be onsite through the day offering an historic account of the life and times of a confederate soldier of February, 1864. Local historian and author, Eric Musgrove will present a lecture program at 1:00 pm at the Depot Conference Room, adjacent to the museum.

As a kickoff to the open house weekend on Friday, February 10, museum curator Randy Torrance will introduce a new program of the museum, called History Hunters. These gatherings will be held over the lunch hour and are “user friendly” for both retirees and those still in the workforce. Attendees are encouraged to bring a sack lunch and eat while they learn something fascinating.

History Hunter events begin at 12:10 and are approximately 35 minutes long, with a question and answer session afterwards. They are scheduled around the lunch hour and participants are encouraged to bring a sack lunch. To accommodate work schedules, participants should feel comfortable leaving when required.

HISTORY HUNTERS

EVERY MONTH during the noon hour, the museum will host a First Friday History Hunter event. This event is held over the lunch hour and is “user friendly” for both retirees and those still in the workforce. Attendees are encouraged to bring a sack lunch and eat while they learn something fascinating about Suwannee County History.

First Friday History Hunter events begin at 12:10 and are approximately 35 minutes long, with a question and answer session afterwards. They are scheduled around the lunch hour and participants are encouraged to bring a sack lunch. To accommodate work schedules, participants should feel comfortable leaving when required.
